Those are the words of Frederick Douglass, a courageous and brilliant man. In his own life he became a free man because knowledge freed him. When he realized that fact he said “From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom.”1 Douglass originally meant this to reveal the pathway to freedom from slavery for African Americans, but this is a message for all people, for all times and it certainly has application to our situation in the US today. His many speeches and writings still resonate today. Consider this from an 1886 speech celebrating the 24th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation:
- “Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.”2
